I am a 31 year old male who is looking for at least one or two other partners to help start a Moderation Management Group in my area or near my area. Alcoholics Anonymous is a great group but it is not for everyone. Not everyone suffers from severe Alcohol Use Disorder (or in other terms, are severe alcoholics). Even in the AA literature, there is a distinction between "true Alcoholics" and "problem drinkers". Many people who have alcohol problems may already be able to function in their lives (may be able to hold a job and attend to certain duties) but many also feel that they would be able to live better and more full lives if they didn't drink as much. I've attended AA and it was not very helpful because I could not identify with many of the people in the program who felt they needed to be abstinant in order to live productive lives. I also did not believe that I needed a Higher Power in order to gain control over my issue (but if you feel that you do, that is great and Moderation Management can still be for you! MM will welcome all religions and agnostics and athiests). I also did not like the idea that we have to admit we are "powerless" in order to gain a sense of control over our lives; moderation management can help us gain a sense of control of our drinking and our lives without admitting that we are "powerless". Moderation Management will not be for everyone. I read that about 30% of people who start out in Moderation Management wind up going to AA because they choose that abstinance is best for them. In Moderation Management, you can choose your own goals (which could include abstinance) but many people choose goals that will allow them to live fuller and more productive lives, and to lessen their drinking intake at the same time. We do not need to drink everyday, and we do not need to drink to deal with our problems. Moderation Managment is based on psychology principles and evidence based techniques and strategies that truly work for people. If you feel like you can benefit from Moderation Management, and would like to start a group with me then please contact me ASAP. I will attach the link here for the Moderation Management website. Like AA meetings, the structure of MM is similar in that its free membership, and its not subscription-based like some other management programs. People should have a free support group to go and get help. We can support each other in order to live happier, healthier lives. Remember, you get to make your own goals (whether that be abstinance or cutting down from 5 drinks to 3 drinks to 2 drinks to 1 drink a day, every other day, every week, and so on and so on). I hope to hear from you soon and we will can get a group like this going in our area. All we have around here is AA.
