This annual vine is an heirloom climber with
showy pinkish purple blossoms, grown by
President Thomas Jefferson at Monticello
over 200 years ago. Foliage has purple veining.
A strong support is recommended as the weight
of the vines will become substantial. After
pollination, flowers will develop into bright
purple pods, equally showy. When pods are
tan and dry at the end of the season (see photo 8),
they can be collected and husked to reveal
the seeds for the following year
(self perpetuating).
Latin name is Dolichos lablab. Seeds were
harvested by me in Fall 2025 for growing in
Summer 2026. All photos taken in my own
garden.
Soak seeds overnight in tepid water. Look for
the seeds that are swelling up and plant those first.
Start early indoors or plant outside after the
frost date of May 15th.
35 seeds for the Purple Hyacinth Bean Vine
for $3.00 cash.
A porch pick up will be arranged.
