Photos 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 show the actual
cuttings for sale. Other photos were taken
in summer in my garden. Organically
grown, these cuttings came from a
mature specimen 18 years old.
This plant is famous for its Crucifixion
Symbolism. The name "passion flower"
was given by 16th century Spanish
missionaries in South America who
thought they saw a reference to the
Crucifixion of Christ in the elaborate
flower structures:
--Fringed corona represents the crown of thorns.
--Five anthers correspond to the five wounds.
--Three styles stand for the three nails.
--Ten petals are for the 10 apostles who did not
attend the crucifixion.
Being a tropical vine, it will perish if
left outside in winter. Bud and bloom
photos are from the parent plant in
summer. Vines will need a STURDY
support to cling to for the next growing season.
Parent plant stays outside from mid-May
until fall, un-potted and installed directly
into a garden bed, climbing on a metal arbor.
In fall, it is cut back to about 18”, dug and
potted to make its return inside for cold months.
Passiflora wants very bright light in
winter such as a south-facing window.
Prevent the rootball from freezing and
avoid cold windowsills and drafty doorways.
(And cold vehicles.)
